How to mix acrylic paint colors to make indigo.

  • Indigo is a very dark Blue.
  • So, you are going to take the ultramarine blue. But any blue will work just fine. Squeeze out about a dime size amount of the blue into a painters palette. With black, a little bit goes a very long way. So, you are going to squeeze out a tiny little like pea size amount of the black.
  • Take your palette knife and mix those two colors. And you will see that the black very quickly fills out that blue making it very dark. If it is too dark and you can’t see enough of the blue, squeeze out a little more blue into there. And you have indigo.
  • Take a white paper and apply the resultant color. This is to ascertain whether we have indigo color.

Indigo is an all natural vegan hair dye. It will cover your hair and last for up to six weeks, and it will also cover grays. Indigo is typically used to create those black to brown tones naturally. It is always used with Henna.

Do not ever use that indigo powder on its own. If you do, you could get that green hue in your hair that you don’t want. Sometimes you can get green hair and think it’s the Henna. It is not the Henna because it stains only reddish tones.

If you put indigo alone in your hair or that black henna product that you pick in the market, it will entirely give you a green hue in your hair. Therefore, avoid that.

Step 1. Add Salt (Optional):

Put indigo powder on a glass bowl, stainless steel bowl. Plastic is okay but porous so it will stain. Therefore, it is entirely up to you. Add a little bit of salt. The salt will help it cling better to the hair strand. Blend it up using a dye brush or a spoon.

Step 2. Add water:

For an indigo color always use water to mix it with. Indigo does not like other liquids and will not work correctly if you use other fluids. The water should be warmed up about 105 degrees. Add in the water slowly a little bit at a time because indigo is very runny.

You will notice that the powder floats a little bit. You will have to get it all moist. If it remains thick, add more liquid.

Step 3. Mix well:

Slowly keep adding enough water, so you get a nice thick paste. It is recommended to keep indigo as a thick paste. The reason is that you would not want it to be too runny when you are using it to dye your hair.

When mixing be sure that you have a good consistency. The mixture will have to sit and rest twenty minutes. You can also let it rest for thirty minutes. It will dry up if it sits for more than thirty minutes.

Step 4. Dye release:

When allowing the indigo to sit for dye release do not continuously mix it. After you achieve dye release, you will notice a dark, metallic type top layer. Immediately you move the top layer away, you will see the lighter green shade.

On this stage, the indigo paint is ready to use. You can either add it directly to your henna paste that has already been sitting and available and has achieved dye release to achieve those reddish brown tones, maybe a nice medium brown tone or dark brown tones.

If not use in that way you are going to be using it alone as a second step after you have achieved to make a pure black orange treatment on your hair.

Because indigo is fussy and does not always take to your hair the first time, it is normal that you need a second or third application. Therefore do not give up on the indigo and the henna process
